Just like human beings and any other animal, dogs need both exercise and mental stimulation. If like me your beloved pooch often fancies him or herself as a landscape gardner, or Houdini of the modern dog world, or likes to entertain your neighbours with some great sounding barking, your dog needs some stimulation!
How many of us have been guilty of being away at work all day, arrive home tired, and just don’t have the time to take the dog out? How many of our beloved pooch’s are sitting at home, patiently waiting and hoping for you to arrive, and take them out?
A dog whose exercise needs are met may rest more calmly at home and be less fretful when left alone. The modern dog-management mantra of "A good dog is a tired dog" is gospel to many people. Exercise can not only improve bone, joint and general physical health, but can also provide the necessary mental stimulation every dog needs in their daily lives.
Just like us humans, dogs don't need to take up marathon running in order to adequately exercise , and in fact just like us humans, too much sudden excessive exercise can harm your dog. A sedate walk with your dog can be great for both of you, but even these don't have to be long distance. Take a look at how happy your dog looks as you walk down your street, just to be out of the house can be enough to break the cycle of boredom and in some cases, fretting and general bad behaviour.
As in most other things, moderation works admirably for dogs when it comes to exercise. Dog use body language to communicate, and many dogs will get enough exercise just from spending interesting days with people and other animals they enjoy. Exercise that is healthy for both mind and body is the very best kind of exercise for your dog. Simply taking the dog with you to grab that cup of coffee and the paper each day, or walking with the kids to school, can provide your pooch with exactly what they need.
Not all dogs require the same amount of exercise. In considering this question, we also must expand our “human” concept of exercise. Dog exercise comes in a variety of forms not regularly practiced by people.
Exercise needs have very little to do with size. Instead breed tends to count the most. For example Jack Russell Terriers and Shelties often begin to misbehave when given too few dog exercise opportunities. On the other hand, a mastiff, and many other large dogs may be happy with a couple of daily walks in the park or a 15 minute game of catch the Frisbee.
Little dogs quite frequently require more exercise than larger dogs. Some exercise needs for small dogs can be satisfied in an apartment or back yard. If the small dog has adequate toys, or a dog or cat companion, the dog can generally meet some of its exercise needs.
For those who do require more exercise, these days there are any number of options such as agility, swimming, obedience training and special games such as flyball.
Be sure to research local dog friendly parks, beaches and exercise areas in your neighbourhood, and if you really find you just don’t have the time to give the dog the exercise and daily stimulation required, investigate hiring a dog walker. Dog walkers are there specifically to provide what you can’t, and can provide a fantastic solution to those of us who are time poor. Check your local council website, ask other dog owners at the dog park for information on dog free parks, cafes, beaches and walkways, and remember just how much joy your dog brings to your world, we owe it to them to make their day as happy and fun as it can be.

Mid-size breeds also vary in their need for exercise. Expect dogs that are natural hunters or herders to require more exercise. Beagles, hounds, border collies, Alaskan sled dogs, and Australian shepherds are naturally going to be restless if cooped up. They need time to run around, catch things, chase things, and to walk or jog.

Many of the working dogs benefit from having another dog companion. They also will benefit from visits to dog parks. A thirty minute to one hour visit to a dog park each day frequently gives the dog as much exercise as he needs because playing with other dogs requires exertion. Also expect to walk or jog with these dogs daily.
Exercise – a must do for any dog
Just like humans, dogs require exercise, right? Simple statement, most of us would agree with, and yet why then do so many of our beloved family members spend hours and hours at home alone,
Some dogs also require mental exercise. Dogs, like people, can get bored. Certain dogs get bored enough to engage in undesirable behaviors like destroying potted plants or eating your shoes and furniture. New toys that require some work to get reward are fantastic for dogs that need a mental challenge. Also, daily interaction with your dog will help satisfy some mental exercise needs.

Since many dogs are mixed breeds, it may be hard to know what type of exercise requirements a dog has. Once you get a mixed breed dog observe its behavior. If the dog enjoys basking in the sun most of the day, it probably does not need as much exercise. Conversely, if the dog appears restless and wanders around the house or yard relentlessly, its needs may be better met by more exercise. Also, older dogs tend to have less daily exercise needs than do younger dogs.

As with people, be wary of providing too much exercise in hot temperatures. During hot months, allow your dog to take breaks and bring along water. Also choose exercise periods from the coolest parts of the day, like right before sunrise or right after sunset.

Finally and most importantly of all, enjoy your dog! Nothing makes me smile more than walking along behind my dog and seeing a wagging tail and the look of sheer delight on her little face, the best therapy in the world!

The Gold Coast has many fantastic, dog friendly areas for dogs to do what dogs love to do, run, swim, chase and sniff! There are a range of off lead parks and beaches that provide the perfect location for Walktime walks.

Walktime operates dog walks Monday to Friday for dogs of all shapes and sizes, and guarantees your dog will have a grin on his/her face and the waggiest tail around. Most walks are conducted in groups, as seen below, Rex, Lily, Mabel, Mojo and Bindi are having a ball at Rosser park. Mabel has to stay on the lead as unfortunately she likes to go off on her own adventures, the others are allowed off the lead to run and swim as much as they like. Mojo loves to swim and chase the odd pine cone, Lily and Rex just love to chase each other, and Bindi is just happy to find a stick and carry it everywhere.

Ensure your dog is having this much fun and book now. Doggy day care is also available to those who require all day entertainment, as is overnight boarding. Places are limited and open only to those dogs who are well socialised, fully vaccinated and registered with the local council.

Walktime guarantees you will come home to a happy, healthy hound. Having surveyed our happy clients, (you can see this for yourself from the pictures below), we are sure your dog will have the time of it's life oiut and about with Walktime.

During these hotter months all walks are conducted in areas where the dogs can swim, or at least dip their paws or cool off their tummies, very impotrant for all dogs, and of course a real hit with most of our pooches who just love to swim. Swims are often followed by some mad running around and chasing each other, and of course a roll in the lovely green grass to dry off and have a good rub all over. (see Panda below). Often a roll over is a popular time for Mabel or Panda to sneek up on each other, or poor Mojo and get in a quick invite for a play, and again the mad chasing begins.

Beach walks at Currumbin are also very popular this time of year, just ask Harry who adores swimming in the river, and chasing every other dog on the beach, its the perfect break to a long day at home waiting for mum and dad to get home.

So don't leave your dog home alone all day, hot and bored, give Walktime a call and relax knowing your pooch is having the time of it's life.

If your dog is anything like mine, there is no way your dog is ever going to a boarding kennel, or staying home alone over the holiday season. But what can you do with your spoilt pooch?

The answer is simple….book into the at home Walktime dog boarding service. Walktime board one or two dogs at a time at our home, and yes we let them come inside, cuddle on the couch and even sleep on the bed, just like they do at home with you. Their days will be filled with Walktime walks to the park and the beach, and they will always have a human close at hand for the company they are used to.

Places are extremely limited and are filling fast so don't delay, book now and ensure peace of mind for you and your dog over the holiday period.
